Fly fishing at Kamberg Valley Hideaway

Spurwing Dam is our fishing dam at Kamberg Valley Hideaway.

It is approximately one hectare in size and has been stocked with just over 200 rainbow trout. These trout (having been stocked at different times) vary in size from about 250g - 1kg.

Unfortunately, there are also some bass that have managed to make Spurwing Dam their home, so when fishing, you are likely to catch both bass as well as rainbow trout on your fly-rod.

We do also allow spinning rods to be used at Spurwing Dam.

There is a lot of structure within the dam so the depths vary from about half a metre to about 4 metres deep.

Float tubes are welcome, although most areas of the dam can be fished from either the banks, the island or the jetty.

Guests staying in our self catering cottages are not charged a rod permit to fish in Spurwing Dam, you are welcome to enjoy the dam whenever you like.

We do encourage a catch and release policy (if you manage to catch one of our beautiful rainbow trout) at Kamberg Valley Hideaway, however if guests do decide to keep any trout they catch, we do charge a re-stocking fee of R100 per kg.

Fly fishing at Highmoor Nature Reserve

Kamberg Valley Hideaway is located only 8 kms from Highmoor Nature Reserve, a renowned fly fishing location.

The drive from the self catering accommodation at Kamberg Valley Hideaway to Highmoor Nature Reserve is spectacular in itself as you wind your way up through the valley to the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains

Highmoor has two spectacular trout fishing dams which are well stocked and the waters are crystal clear. Large trophy sized rainbow trout can be seen swimming around, whetting the appetite of any keen fly fisherman!

To enjoy some fly fishing at Highmoor Nature Reserve you will need to book daily rod permits as they restrict the number of anglers to 6 per day.

The daily charge per fly fisherman is currently R100, plus their is an additional park entry charge of R50 per person.

Highmoor Nature reserve does have two open seasons each year for fly fishing, so if you wish to fly fish at Highmoor Nature Reserve do make sure you visit during the two open seasons:

Fly fishing at Kamberg Nature Reserve in the Drakensberg

Kamberg Nature Reserve is approximately 12kms away from the self catering accommodation at Kamberg Valley Hideaway and they also have fly fishing available.

Kamberg Nature Reserve has two stocked trout dams and fishermen are also able to fish parts of the Mooi River where it runs through the nature reserve.

Kamberg Nature Reserve is open all year for fishing and booking is not required, as there is no limit to the number of anglers per day.

Fishermen must purchase a daily rod permit from the reception centre when they arrive at Kamberg Nature Reserve. There is also an additional daily park entry fee per person. It is best to contact Kamberg Nature Reserve for information regarding these costs and the gate opening times.

Kamberg Nature Reserve has a great picnic spot close to the two fly fishing dams, so anglers and families can enjoy a great day visiting Kamberg Nature Reserve from Kamberg Valley Hideaway.

Fly fishing with Wildfly

In the Kamberg Valley area there are many privately stocked trout dams that keen fly fishermen can spend the day fishing by contacting WildFly in Nottingham Road.

WildFly will provide a map of where the dam is located and the daily fishing times and by purchasing a daily permit you are able to go and fish the private dam you choose to.

WildFly also have a great shop in Nottingham Road that sells a huge variety of different flies and fishing equipment. They are also able to offer advise on which flies are working well at different times of the year.

Kamberg Trout Festival

At the beginning of June every year, Kamberg Valley hosts the well-know fly-fishing tournament, the Kamberg Trout Festival.
