Fly fishing
Fly fishing is a very popular activity in the Kamberg Valley region of the Drakensberg and there are several different fly fishing options in the area. Our page on Fly Fishing contains more information, so have a look there for full details. Kamberg Valley Hideaway itself has a beautiful dam that is stocked with rainbow trout (and bass) and our guests are welcome to fish for no additional charge. Highmoor Nature Reserve is located very close to Kamberg Valley Hideaway and this its a renowned fly fishing location. They have two well stocked trout dams where you can try your luck with a fly rod. Kamberg Nature Reserve is approximately 12kms from Kamberg Valey Hideaway and also has opportunities for fly fishing in both its stocked dams and the Mooi River. |
Photography
There are an abundance of fabulous opportunities for the enthusiastic photographer at Kamberg Valley Hideaway and the surrounding area.
Sunrise and sunset are spectacular at Kamberg Valley Hideaway, so set your alarm and rise early to enjoy the spender of the breaking day, or catch the golden hour before sunset at Spurwing Dam. The dramatic scenery at Highmoor, Kamberg and Giants Castle Nature Reserves are also fabulous locations to add to your landscape photography portfolio. In addition, there are a multitude of bird species building their nests, searching for food or preening themselves in and around Spurwing Dam, not to mention dragonflies, butterflies, blesbok, reed buck, and if you are very lucky, Serval and Caracal, so you have plenty of opportunity to capture some new wildlife shots too. |
Birding |
If you are a keen birder, our dams and the Little Mooi River at the bottom of our property attract a large number of different bird species.
In addition, Giants Castle Nature Reserve, Kamberg Nature Reserve and Highmoor Nature Reserve are all nearby, so this area is a great location to spend some time identifying the numerous bird species that live or visit the area at certain times of the year. At Giants Castle Nature Reserve there is also the renowned Vulture Restaurant. This does need to be booked, so if you are interested in visiting, please let us know before you arrive, so that we can make the necessary arrangements for you. |
Walking and Hiking in the Drakensberg
If you enjoy walking and hiking, Kamberg Valley Hideaway is ideally located close to three Nature Reserves, which are all part of the Drakensberg World Heritage Site.
Kamberg Nature Reserve |
Kamberg Nature Reserve is approximately 11kms away.
From here, walking tours are conducted to Games Pass Shelter, arguably the most important rock art site in South Africa. It was there that the art of the Bushmen was first seriously studied in the 1920s. The panel dubbed "the Rosetta Stone" was found in the Games Pass Shelter and it is was from this panel that the connection between the art and the supernatural was first discerned. The cave is easily reached in one hour along a very well constructed path. There are several distinct panels, starting with some faded scenes, then the Rosetta Stone, and finally the main attraction which is a section a few metres across where numerous polychrome eland seem to walk right across the rock wall. Guided walks to Games Pass Shelter include a high quality film at the Rock Art Centre, which puts the cave and its paintings into a universal perspective. These guided tours are a great attraction and simply should not be missed! |
Highmoor Nature Reserve |
Highmoor Nature Reserve is about 8kms away.
Highmoor has spectacular trout fishing dams and the widest panoramic views of the Drakensberg. There are two caves - Aasvoel Cave and Caracal Cave – both 2.5km from the main office, and Fultons Rock, which has great rock paintings. It is also one of the only places where you are actually walking on top of the foothills. To enjoy some fly fishing at Highmoor Nature Reserve you will need to book permits as they restrict the number of anglers per day, but we at Kamberg Valley Hideaway can help organise this for you in advance of your stay. |
Giants Castle Nature Reserve |
Giants Castle Nature Reserve is approximately 30kms away and takes about 40 minutes by car to reach the entrance of the Nature Reserve.
There are numerous walking and hiking trails, from the leisurely, to the more strenuous, to the challenging. Some trails take only 30 minutes or so, others take several hours, so there is something to suit every level of hiker. There is a hike to the Main Caves, (which you can book at reception), where there are great examples of the San Bushmen's Rock Art Paintings. A guide will meet you at the cave and show you the paintings. There is also a restaurant by the reception, so if you fancy making a day of it, head over out from Kamberg Valley Hideaway in the morning, enjoy some of the trails and then recharge with a delicious lunch in the restaurant. Definitely worth a trip! |
Mountain Biking
Another very popular weekend activity is mountain biking and we are pleased to say that there are many great mountain biking trails in the Kamberg area of the Southern Drakensberg. In fact in March, there is a two-day event held for avid and novice mountain bikers (and trail runners) known at the Kamberg Classic. We can provide you with accommodation for this event so just contact us for availability.
